We’re had great couple of weeks at Surefire, although last week was really wet! Our Fall Horse Trials (September 25-27) was a great success and it was especially fun to watch the young horses go on Friday—thanks to Landmark’s Young Event Team sponsorship! We had a great turnout for both the four- and five-year-old divisions, with Marilyn Little winning the YEH5 with RF Smoking Gun and Jessica Brumfield winning the YEH4 with Landmark’s Mochachino. Mochachino can really jump and is an unusual color, a dun and white paint with black in his tail. In the Future Event Horse divisions, Tiffany Catledge won the 2YR with Soliloquy, and Lauren Balcomb won the 3YR with Lamondale Leviathan. Full results for the YEH and FEH can be found on our Horse Trials page.

We worked really hard on our footing for the event, the courses were quite good, and we were very fortunate to have cool weather. On the competition side, Maya Black rode both my young horses in the Beginner Novice. Volcan de Caverie (Volcan), my new six-year-old, won his division, and Electrik (Elvis), who is five, was 4th in his division with a couple unfortunate rails in the show jumping due to greeness. Thanks to Maya for riding both young horses!

As far as I go, I had a great event at Plantation with Urrem. She put in a nice dressage test, and although she and I were not quite in sync at the beginning cross-country, we got it together by end, and show jumped clean to finish in third. Unfortunately, my ride on Skyeler Icke Voss’s MTF Cooley Caliber did not go as well. We had a nice dressage and were going well cross-country until the third to last, where he made an uncharacteristic mistake, left a leg and I fell. Unfortunately, it turns out he broke the bone behind his knee. I’m so sorry to Skyler and her team at Morningside, but fortunately, he’ll heal really well—it will take about eight weeks— and he’s been a great patient. I told Skyeler he just wanted to be on maternity leave with her!

This last weekend at Morven we got enough rain for the months of August and September all at once! The group of organizers and team at Morven did a fantastic job to pull off the event. The horse trials became a combined event, which I did in the Training with Dashwood, Anita Antenucci’s horse. She was her most grown-up yet, with just one down in show jumping.

The CIC divisions all did their cross-country on Sunday and I competed Rem in the one-star. She put in a good dressage test; it could still be a bit smoother but was fun to ride. Rem had one down behind in the show jumping and  although there were a lot of scratches before cross-country, I made the decision to run and the footing was actually quite good. Plus, I feel it’s good practice to learn to ride in the mud and wet. Rem handled it better and better as she went and we ended up second in her first one-star.

Maya also competed her young horse, Mowgli, in the Training, as well as Cody in the three-star. I’m proud of Maya and Cody; she used the double bridle again and had a beautiful test and was third after dressage. If we can squeak out a little better balance in Cody’s canter I think they’ll be in the top in the dressage at Fair Hill. They had a beautiful, clean show jump and withdrew before cross-country. It’s always nice when you have a rider and horse start to put things together that you’ve been working on for four or five months; it doesn’t always happen. I’m really excited for this pair at Fair Hill!  I’d also like to give a big shout-out to Bevin Dugan and Claudia Sarnoff for jumping great rounds in the CIC2*.

I’m in Hawaii to cheer on my brother in the Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona. It’s the second time he qualified, but last time I didn’t get to go because I was busy winning Fair Hill. As part of the event, my brother and I are running a short race to promote the sport. I’ll be dressed in a Wonder Woman outfit, pictures to follow...
