Sporting Days and Full Gallop

The month of March has been a whirl-wind, and it’s amazing to me that I’m headed to Carolina right now and then going home from there. It feels like we just got to Aiken a month ago!

The first weekend of March I was fortunate to run four horses in the Training at Sporting Days. It’s amazing that when you ride four at the same level, and you get that practice, you ride better, and you don’t think so much as just react. Whether you’re on a green or more experienced horse, they’re all such a good learning experience. Needless to say, I had a blast, and even more so because my Mom got to be there to video and help all day.

I got to come right back the next weekend and run three at Full Gallop—Cailtin’s horse  Jolliyat (Cliff) at Preliminary, and Urrem (Rem) and Call to Order (Joe) in the Training. All three were great. Joe had a beautiful dressage and the best show jumping, even though he had rail, but I had some control issues and an unfortunate stop on cross-country at the bank when he couldn’t see where was going. Cliff was awesome. I really think if he stays at Preliminary a couple more runs, he’ll go right back up the levels when he feels confident.

We’ve packed all our stuff from Aiken, and are sad to be leaving our great barn and  beautiful turnout. But, we’re excited to be going home, and I’m equally excited to be on my way to doing the CIC** on Dyson at Carolina, the Training on Rem and the Preliminary on Cliff. I’ll let you know how it all goes!

Competition Update

Unfortunately, I had to scratch Syd from Pine Top—he was injured during his last gallop the week before when he spooked, fell down, and got up quite lame. He trotted out of it, so I cantered the rest of the hill and he seemed fine. After, I iced him, but Friday morning he was really lame, and by Sunday, quite bad. So he'll just be out for a while and then maybe be someone’s Young Rider horse. It makes me quite sad but we’ll see how the time goes and how he heals.

With that being said, I still have a lot to look forward to, and was quite chuffed with Dyson at Pine Top. He’s going to be so good on the flat, and is already trying hard to be that way. I had a couple unfortunate rails in stadium with him—I got my balance for those jumps a bit late had he had them down behind, but on cross-country he was just really a fun horse to ride.

Caitlin Calder’s horse, Jolliyat, was great fun to ride in dressage and show jumping but didn't really want to play on cross-country, where he got worried into the water and had a run-out. We'll go back a level and play at Preliminary for a while until he can be winner for someone at a one-star. Once he gets all his ducks in row, he'll be back to the upper levels. I'm riding him because Caitlin’s decided to take a break from horses for a while and reevaluate what she wants to do.

As hard as is to have Syd injured, I’m so excited for my new mare, Rem, who did her first training at Full Gallop. Although she had some happy feet with a bit of bucking, she was tons of fun to ride. Nolo was 5th in the Novice and continues to improve. Between Roundhouse Red, Nolo and Call to Order, we have such nice sale horse, please check out— they’d all be great for any amateur’s job.
