I was so proud of Alanna, who’s been helping me. She did her first competition in the States with her cute horse, and although she didn’t win a ribbon, she had a great time and rode really well.
The baby horses were great at Morven. They’re not babies age-wise, but as far as mentality and education, Elvis (Electrik), Nora (Dashwood), and Volcan (Volcan de Caverie) are still youngsters. Though we didn’t actually win any major ribbons, to be honest, it was probably the best all three have felt in competition. Nora was the most mature of the three, and even though her score on the flat didn’t reflect it, she was more connected than she’s been. She barely rubbed a rail into the combination in show jumping, and then was really nice cross-country. Volcan is a work in progress on the flat, and between he and Electrik, it’s a bit like Stevie Wonder out there as they like to keep the beat with the bit in their head—can you say not connected? Volcan was great in the show jumping and on cross-country, and Elvis was really, really fun and quite mature about all three phases. I didn’t run for time, I just let them pick their own pace and canter around with that.
